👻M o n d a y👻 ⠀⠀ Hello, bookish lovelies! ⠀⠀ After seven *very* long weeks, this Spooky Mama is finally getting her hair done today. My bangs are in my eyes, my color has faded to non existence, and the regrowth is real, y’all. I can’t decide if I should stay pink or delve into the purple range...what does everyone think? ⠀⠀ My Plain Jane is a book that surprised me. When it showed up in my @owlcrate box last year (I think it was last year anyway) I wasn’t going to read it. My Lady Jane felt too cutesy for my tastes, and this one just seemed like more of the same. I’m not totally sure what possessed me to finally pick it up, but once I did I realized my opinions were totally unfounded. Is it cutesy and a little cheesy? Yes. Does it go too far and wander into the realm of saccharine sweet goop? Never. This book is smart, funny, and full of the feminist girl power that I so love. A full review will be up on the blog soon, so I’ll just say now that if stories about badass queer librarians leading the resistance in a Wild West type future United States peaks your interest, then just go ahead and pre order it...you can thank me later. ⠀⠀ It’s official: the holiday season is nearly upon us. If you’re like me and keep it spooky all year round, then allow me to recommend the Christmas-themed horror novel NOS4A2 (and its fantastic @nos4a2 tv adaptation) and the equally festive and spooky candle by @getfictional that’s inspired by it. ⚰️W o r l d. W a r. Z⚰️ ⠀⠀ Happy Thursday, bookworms! ⠀⠀ Let’s talk zombies today. I don’t mention zombies much on here because, quite frankly, there aren’t very many good zombie books. I’m pretty terrified of zombies: hordes of bodies coming at intent on murdering you in one of the most gruesome ways possible? The entire world falling into chaos and ruin? Turning into one yourself? Yeah, they scare me, so it’s disappointing they’re so rarely well done in books... ⠀⠀ World War Z is, in my opinion, hands down the best zombie book ever written. Now, if you’ve seen the movie, put that out of your mind because the book is nothing like it (truly, they should be two different entities). The book takes place years after the zombie apocalypse has been somewhat controlled and humanity is rebuilding, and a reporter is going around and asking survivors for their stories. The entire book is told in these first person narratives and, let me tell you Dear Reader, they are powerful. Each one is so real, and so terrifyingly plausible, that you can’t help but put yourself in that space. A few of them still haunt me. Through these stories, we see how the apocalypse happened, how people coped, and finally how they began to rebuild. It’s a book unlike anything I’ve ever read in fiction, and it reminds me of the books written after Holocaust.
